I do. And maybe I should have posted at least one of the statue. It is an important monument.

John,

Thanks for the eye witness report. Abandoned might be the wrong word. It has many empty windows and the entrances are fenced off. Is it possible that the people you saw were beginning some demolition/renovation work?

i don't think 52 39th Street, Sunset Park, Brooklyn is abandoned because i see trucks and people working there not unless they are using the building illegal and or having illegal immigrants because i do see most of these buildings have illegal immigrants working there i do remember a few years ago i went inside i notice people were looking at me like if i was the immigration or a investigator

Great photos and adventures across NYC coastlines. I thought you might enjoy a project concerning similar areas - although more focussed on flotsam than rising water levels - http://outerspacecities.com/lll/lll.html. If you have any questions about specific coastal spots or flotsam in general, let me know. All the best in future explorations!

On the one hand that's easy to imagine. Given the past 100 years worth of change it's now hard to picture. Perhaps it had the look of present day Truro on Cape Cod...? Must be some old engravings out there -JP

John,

What I have read in Betsy McCully's book "City at the Water's Edge," is that Coney Island had a "dune habitat." On page 155, she quotes from the 19th century geologist, William Mather that Coney Island's seaward side was "a labyrinth of sand dunes, formed by wind..." The dunes were 5 to 30 ft. high. I don't know if there are any unaltered dune environments that would be close to what Coney Island once was.

I am new to the geography and topography of Coney Island and the New York Harbor. I understand that Coney Island has been built up. I'm curious about what it looked like 500 years ago. Are there any beaches in the area that might be representative of that coastal natural landscape before human alteration?

Is there a real beach in Howard Beach with sand where kids can walk into the surf, or is it just a name of a tract of old homes?
Are there any roadsigns about Howard Beach? Here in California we collect old roadsigns about the infamous multistate Route 66. I could not find any pics of old HB roadsigns on the Internet.
